These tiny and elegant beetles we call ladybugs and ladybirds are so fun to watch. Seeing a ladybug is often considered good luck, and unlike any other insect, people usually like them. Even folks that would admit a general aversion to insects are often fond of ladybugs.
There are plenty of traditions and beliefs surrounding these little guys. For example, some consider them to be a symbol of love. Others will even go as far as to believe a ladybug can make wishes come true. I've even heard of a superstition that says if one catches a ladybug and then lets her go, she'll fly to the person one loves and whisper your name in his/her ear.
Whether we hold such beliefs to be true or simply entertaining, I think most of us would agree a ladybug has become a symbol of joy throughout the world. It represents rebirth and spring, and the happiness that arrives with it. So, here's a series of macro photographs celebrating the joy that are ladybugs.
